Samsung N150 vs N120
Posted by jez in User Views
Forum member nmhotel has shared some thoughts with the N120 compared to the N150. Unfortunately his original N120 suffered at the hands of gravity and has now been replaced with a brand new N150!

The primary difference between these two netbooks is the different Atom processors, the former contains the N270, whilst the newer model has the more efficient N450 Pine Trail chip.

So if you are thinking of buying or upgrading to a Samsung N150 netbook then his notes might prove helpful.

Introducing the Samsung N315
Posted by jez in Samsung Netbook News
So the rumour that Samsung would be consolidating their netbook releases once again doesn't hold true with another new model now appearing on the horizon!

This time it appears to be an update of the Samsung N310 (also known as the Samsung GO in the US), the Samsung techies have replaced the Atom N270 with the new Atom N450 Pine Trail chip. So expect longer battery life than the previous incarnation of this netbook.

Check out the Samsung page here. The official US page also notes that it comes with pre-installed Times reader software which will allow people to read the New York Times on the move.

Samsung N220 with Broadcom HD Decoder
Posted by jez in Samsung Netbook News
A couple of people have mentioned noticing some Broadcom software in the N220's Windows start menu. For those that don't know, Broadcom make hardware for decoding high definition video - something that netbooks generally struggle with at the moment.

Well, according to the NetbookReviews.net website, the UK version of the N220 does have this hardware built in. Check out the article here.

So I would love to hear from any UK N220 owners who have experimented with video playback and can let us know how well it performs.

Thanks to Matt at NetbookReview.net for the tip.

Build a DVD drive for Your Netbook!
Posted by jez in Hacks - Hardware
So as we all know netbooks don't come with a built in optical drive, this is generally not a big problem in the days of USB keys and WiFi, but from time to time a DVD drive can be a very useful accessory.

So if you fancy recycling an old desktop drive you might have at home then one SammyNetbook.com forum member kindly shared his creativity over in this thread. This DVD drive was made for just £15 (that's about $25).

As usual, these mods should only be attempted if you know what you are doing.

Netbooks - they aren't just for Christmas!
Posted by jez in User Views
I enjoy sharing community experiences whereever possible and am always looking to find out what other people are up to with their netbooks.

Whilst passing some time on Twitter I got in touch with Steve Ince after I noticed he had worked on one of my favourite games, Beneath a Steel Sky. I don't think Steve or I want to be reminded exactly old this game is, but suffice to say it was more than a couple of years ago! Incidentally you can now get the game for free here.

Steve very kindly agreed to share a few notes on why he likes the Samsung N140! If you have something to say about your netbook then please let me know, I'm always interested to hear back from creative people who are using their netbook productively.

My Samsung Netbook

- By Steve Ince

I’d been thinking about getting a netbook for quite some time before I finally chose the Samsung N140. I didn’t want one that was too expensive, but at the same time I wanted one that gave good battery life and had a great keyboard. The N140 seemed to suit my needs the best.

I love the long battery life as I can mostly get a full day’s work out of a single charge, which is particularly useful when visiting clients as I don’t have to pester them for a power point and trail leads across the room.

Being a writer, it is always important for me to have a good keyboard. I’ve been typing for more than thirty years and I don’t wand a keyboard that forces me to adapt my typing style in order to do my work. I want to be able to type and see the words flow on the screen. There are a couple of minor niggles with the layout of the N140, but the shape, size and feel of the keys are great. Much better than the keys on the Dell laptop I bought a couple of years ago.

The size is a great feature. Not only is it half the size of my laptop, it’s about a third of the weight, which means that I can slip it into a smaller bag when I need to and carry it about all day without the feeling that I’ve dislocated my shoulder. In the past I’ve been to conferences and conventions where I took the laptop and left it in the hotel room because I couldn’t face carrying it around all day, which defeats the point of taking it in the first place. Not so with the netbook, which is ideal for this purpose.

The N140 boots up very quickly, too, which means that I can be checking e-mails or writing in a very short time. The speed and size also makes it ideal for using almost anywhere, particularly when space is limited, such as on the train or bus.

I recently went to Paris on business and it was ideal for taking notes in meetings – particularly as it’s not very obtrusive – and for more involved writing. After spending a day in meetings and discussions, I then tucked myself into a corner of their office and wrote a high level story and some dialogue for a new project. The great keyboard enabled me to write very quickly and give the client something to look over before I returned home.

The N140 is rapidly becoming my new best friend.
